Fractional CTO

A fractional CTO brings executive-level technical leadership into an organization on a part-time or advisory basis. This is the right arrangement for a startup that needs architectural direction before it can afford a full-time CTO, for a business navigating a period of technical transition without internal leadership to manage it, or for a board that needs independent technical oversight of an engineering organization.

Capabilities

What a fractional CTO engagement includes

Engineering direction

Technical Strategy and Roadmap

Defining the technical strategy that aligns engineering investment with business objectives: which systems to build, which to buy, which to retire, and in what order. A technical roadmap is only useful if it is grounded in the business model and the actual capacity of the engineering team.

The decisions that matter most

Architecture Decision Oversight

Providing senior technical judgment on the architectural decisions that have long-term consequences: technology selection, system boundaries, data model design, third-party dependencies, and deployment approach. These decisions are inexpensive to influence before they are made and expensive to reverse after.

Management and mentorship

Engineering Team Leadership

Providing leadership and mentorship to the engineering team: establishing engineering standards, running architecture reviews, coaching senior engineers, and creating the technical culture and expectations that a growing engineering organization needs. This is particularly valuable for engineering teams that have outgrown the founder's technical capacity to lead them.

Building the right team

Technical Hiring Guidance

Advising on engineering hiring decisions: what roles to fill in what order, what seniority levels are appropriate, how to structure technical interviews, and how to evaluate candidates for specific technical requirements. A bad senior engineering hire is significantly more costly than a bad junior one.

Independent evaluation

Vendor and Agency Oversight

Providing independent technical oversight of third-party engineering vendors, software agencies, or offshore development partners: reviewing deliverables, evaluating technical quality, and providing the technical leadership layer that most business leaders lack when managing development outsourcing.

Translating engineering to business

Board and Investor Technical Reporting

Providing board-level technical reporting: explaining engineering investment decisions in business terms, reporting on technical debt and risk, communicating the implications of scaling decisions, and providing the technical credibility that investor communications require.

Our approach

Technical leadership and engineering management are different skills

A strong individual contributor engineer is not automatically a strong technical leader. Technical leadership requires the ability to make decisions under uncertainty, to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, to set team direction, and to take accountability for outcomes. We bring that leadership capacity rather than additional engineering capacity.

The arrangement scales to the actual need

Fractional CTO engagements range from a few hours per week for early-stage companies that need occasional architectural guidance, to several days per week for organizations going through significant technical transitions. We scope the engagement to what the situation actually requires rather than a fixed package.

We are direct about what we see

The value of an external technical leader is partly in the independence. We tell boards and leadership what the technical situation actually is, including the parts that are uncomfortable to report. This is particularly relevant in situations where the internal engineering team has incentives to present a more optimistic picture than is warranted.

We plan for the engagement to end

A fractional CTO engagement should have a defined goal: building the technical leadership capacity within the organization so that it does not depend on external advisory indefinitely. We document our approach, mentor internal technical leads, and work toward a transition that leaves the organization with stronger internal leadership capacity than it started with.
